COST -- The cost of OTC loratadine is much lower than the full cost of the prescription H -antihistamines. If insurance companies respond by raising the co-pay for the prescription 1 drugs, even patients with insurance coverage may pay more for them than they would for OTC loratadine. CONCLUSION -- First-generation H -antihistamines can impair psychomotor perfor1 mance, sometimes without noticeable symptoms. Second-generation H -antihistamines are 1 safer. More direct comparisons between the second-generation drugs are needed to determine their relative efficacy in allergic rhinitis and urticaria. For now, the choice among them will probably be determined by their out-of-pocket cost and dextromethorphan.

Fter months of questions, research, and test, one hundred students unveiled the answers to dozens of hypotheses at the Science Fair last week. Most participants encountered problems that threatened the success of their experiments, but all found something to prove. "The highest concentration of bacteria is on the inside door handle of the boy's bathroom." -junior Brian Kashtan Kirby has a history with science: it has won first place several times in the County Fair, it represented 26% of the projects from Santa Cruz County that went into State last year, and the year before, two exhibits went to the International Fair. With an established STIP program Science and Technology Intensive Path ; , it's not surprising to find a room packed with methodical display boards, eager parents, and proud participants. Tables and boards stand separated by category, and first through fifth ribbons indicate which projects will move on to County, along with five honorable mentions. Ten middle school projects and seven or eight high school projects will compete in the County. "The coolest thing for me to see is the creativity that goes into the conception of a project idea, " says Matt Knope, co-host of the science fair and teacher of seventh grade Life Sciences, and AP Bio. "It's awesome this time of year to see how much learning is going on in science at Kirby." Topics ranged from the effects of Red Bull on plants to the main motivations of students. "Gatorade decays teeth faster than soda, orange juice, or milk over a twenty-five day period." -seventh grader Rachel Eisendorf. Many participants linked their research with an outside passion: baseball player Zach Seftel, of the sixth grade, chose testing the efficiency of wood versus metal bats; an easy choice for mountain biker Kai Cahlil, of the seventh grade, was evaluating the energy produced by protein gel packs used by mountain bikers; sophomore and first place winner Rachel Leuthold challenged her coach's advice on the "best" aerodynamic tuck position in downhill skiing and has already used the results. If students have difficulty finding a topic, Knope asks if there is a discipline they prefer and if they would like to work in the field outside ; or the lab inside ; . After finding where a student's interest lies in science, it's easy to come up with an idea. "L'Oreal and Clairol hair dyes sustained their color longer than Garnier Nuctrisse." --eleventh grader Amy Samuels. Middle school's first prize went to seventh grader Maggie Bignell, who compared the rate at which natural plastic, plastic, and paper disintegrate. She wasn't stressed or under pressure to complete last minute details because she turned everything in on time, but she did run into one unavoidable problem: Thanksgiving she found pieces of her project scattered on the ground by raccoons and had to re-bag all of her specimens. Meanwhile, Seftel broke a bat during testing, putting him back a week while he waited for a new one. And eighth grader Mariko Powers, who tested the effects of global warming on the position.

Metoprolol is a 1-selective adrenergic blocking agent, commercially available as oral tablets and an injection. It is commercially available as a racemic mixture and occurs as a white, crystalline powder with a bitter taste and is very soluble in water and freely soluble in alcohol. It has a pKa of 9.68. Metoprolol exhibits less than 3% loss in potency under the conditions used in this study. Several reports support the stability of metoprolol in various vehicles and at various pH levels, including one study at pH 4, 7 and 9. Table 8: Percent of the initial concentration of metoprolol tartrate 10 mg mL ; remaining after packaging in plastic prescription containers and storage at 5C or 25C for up to 60 days and diflunisal.

Stimulants, such as dextroamphetamine dexedrine and adderall ; and methylphenidate ritalin and concerta ; , have chemical structures similar to a family of key brain neurotransmitters called monoamines, which include norepinephrine and dopamine and dihydroergotamine.
The stimulant medication approved for is Dextro-amphetamine Dexedrine ; . This is the same drug that is abused in the civilian world known as "speed." While we use a 5 mg dose, abuse in the outside world is reported to range from 60 to 300 mg. While the use of Dexedrine for performance maintenance is well understood, it is not "FDA Approved." If you choose to use this medication, therefore, you will be required to sign an "Informed Consent" form. The desired effects of these medications are to maintain alertness, focus attention on the task at hand and elevate mood. Changes in mood would be from feeling very tired to feeling more like normal. Possible adverse effects of stimulants include insomnia, overfocusing, abuse, cyclic use with a sedative, decreased appetite and elevated blood pressure. Note that when our three desired effects are exaggerated they become side-effects. This points out that most problems with stimulants are dose related. Because we use these medications for performance maintenance, we only need to use low doses for relatively brief times and can escape significant side-effects most of the time and dexedrine.
