The cellular localization of EAAT1 and tau was examined by immunocytochemical techniques. Based on this finding we speculate that an as yet unidentified mammalian sulfotransferase will have retinol dehydratase activity. We are currently pursuing the cloning and characterization of additional mammalian sulfotransferases to identify the mammalian retinol dehydratase in the hope that it will provide important information about the metabolism of vitamin A and the synthesis of retro-retinoids and dihydroergotamine.
