Dextran-500 and swine-skin gelatin approximately 300 blooms ; were obtained from Sigma. Methylcellulose MX880was obtained from Matheson Coleman & Bell, Norwood, OH. Fetal calf serum was obtained from Biocell Laboratories, Carson, CA. Penicillin 5000 units ml ; and streptomycin sulfate 5000 pg ml ; in saline were obtained from b i n Scientific, Santa Clara, CA, Hanks' buffered saline and arginine-free DME medium were obtained from Grand Island Biological Co., Santa Ana, CA. The DMEmedium was supplemented before use with 0 4 m ornithine, 10 mM 4- 2-hydroxyethyl ; -l-piper. M azineethanesulfonic acid ; , and 25 m glucose Sigma ; . Collagenase M type I and porcine insulin were obtained from Sigma. r2-3H]Glycerol 50 mCi nmol ; and [`Hlarginine were obtained from Amersham Corp. Plastic Contur culture dishes, 60 mm in diameter, were obtained from Lux Scientific Corp., Newbury Park, CA. Fibronectin was prepared according to Engval and Ruslahti 15 300 ml of fresh human plasma were loaded onto a column 2.6 X 60 cm ; Sepharose 4B Pharmacia Inc., Uppsala, Sweden ; linked to gelatin. The column was successively eluted with 0.5 M Tris-HC1 buffer pH 7.4 ; , 0.1 M NaCl, 1 M urea, and 5M urea, all in Tris buffer. The final eluate containing fibronectin was extensively dialyzed against 1 M urea in Tris buffer and stored at 4 "C. Culture dishes were coated with fibronectin by incubation with 20-25 p1 of the fibronectin preparation in 1.5 ml of DME medium for at least 30 min at 37 "C. The fibronectin-containing medium was aspirated before plating the hepatocytes. Hepatocytes of female Sprague-Dawley rats were isolated as previously described 8 ; . The isolated hepatocytes were washed with serum-free DME medium before plating and were cultured in serumfree medium. The cells were incubated for a t least 5 h after plating before the culture medium was changed to the experimental medium containing the macromolecules. The abbreviations used are: VLDL, very low density lipoproteins; TG, triglycerides. DME medium, Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium.

Uterine artery vasoconstriction will decrease placental blood flow. 5. If placental blood flow is decreased significantly enough, there will be a subsequent fetal bradycardia. Cascio et al.4 demonstrated that not only does epinephrine decrease after the induction of labour analgesia, but also that norepinephrine stays the same or slightly increases. The contrasting changes between epinephrine and norepinephrine could lead an imbalance that favours vasoconstriction of the uterine vessels.
