After we had managed to solve the riddle of the sacred mushroom teonancatl in a relatively short time, I also became interested in the problem of another Mexican magic drug not yet chemically elucidated, ololiuhqui. Ololiuhqui is the Aztec name for the seeds of certain climbing plants Convolvulaceae ; that, like the mescaline cactus peyotl and the teonancatl mushrooms, were used in pre-Columbian times by the Aztecs and neighboring people in religious ceremonies and magical healing practices. Ololiuhqui is still used even today by certain Indian tribes like the Zapotec, Chinantec, Mazatec, and Mixtec, who until a short time ago still led a genuinely isolated existence, little influenced by Christianity, in the remote mountains of southern Mexico. An excellent study of the historical, ethnological, and botanical aspects of ololiuhqui was published in 1941 by Richard Evans Schultes, director of the Harvard Botanical Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is entitled "A Contribution to Our Knowledge of Rivea corymbosa, the Narcotic Ololiuqui of the Aztecs." The following statements about the history of ololiuhqui derive chiefly from Schultes's monograph. [Translator's note: As R. Gordon Wasson has pointed out, "ololiuhqui" is a more precise orthography than the more popular spelling used by Schultes. See Botanical Museum Leaflets Harvard University 20: 161-212, 1963.] The earliest records about this drug were written by Spanish chroniclers of the sixteenth century, who also mentioned peyotl and teonancatl. Thus the Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagun, in his already cited famous chronicle Historia General de las Cosas de Nueva Espana, writes about the wondrous effects of ololiuhqui: "There is an herb, called coatl xoxouhqui green snake ; , which produces seeds that are called ololiuhqui. These seeds stupefy and deprive one of reason: they are taken as a potion." We obtain further information about these seeds from the physician Francisco Hernandez, whom Philip II sent to Mexico from Spain, from 1570 to 1575, in order to study the medicaments of the natives. In the chapter "On Ololiuhqui" of his monumental work entitled Rerum Medicarum Novae Hispaniae Thesaurus seu Plantarum, Animalium Mineralium Mexicanorum Historia, published in Rome in 1651, he gives a detailed description and the first illustration of ololiuhqui. An extract from the Latin text accompanying the illustration reads in translation: "Ololiuhqui, which others call coaxihuitl or snake plant, is a climber with thin, green, heart-shaped leaves. The flowers are white, fairly large. The seeds are roundish When the priests of the Indians wanted to visit with the gods and obtain information from them, they ate of this plant in order to become inebriated. Thousands of fantastic images and demons then appeared to them." Despite this comparatively good description, the botanical identification of ololiuhqui as seeds of Rivea corymbosa L. ; Hall. f. occasioned many discussions in specialist circles. Recently preference has been given to the synonym Turbina corymbosa L. ; Raf. When I decided in 1959 to attempt the isolation o the active principles of ololiuhqui, only a single report on chemical work with the seeds of Turbina corymbosa was available. It was the work of the pharmacologist C. G. Santesson of Stockholm, from the year 1937. Santesson, however, was not successful in isolating an active substance in pure form. Contradictory findings had been published about the activity of the ololiuhqui seeds. The psychiatrist H. Osmond conducted a self-experiment with the seeds of Turbina corymbosa in 1955. After the ingestion of 60 to 100 seeds, he entered into a state of.

Some patients may feel that over the past 160 years we have not made much progress in our attempts to successfully treat this condition. Is this so? Have we really failed to advance significantly on this disease despite our powerful array of modern medicaments and surgical techniques? I guess in the eyes of many who suffer from HS the answer would be: yes. Hands up all those who feel comfortable when confronted with a hidradenitis patient. So, what is the cause for this lack of progress and do we really have so little to offer for this condition? A history of confusion First of all, there was the "apocrine misunderstanding". In 1833, six years before the first clinical description of hidradenitis, Purkinje discovered sweat glands in human skin. Twelve years later, in 1845, Robin followed with the first description of the structure and location of apocrine glands, so that in 1854 another Frenchman, Verneuil, having studied Velpeau's work, became the first person to relate the disease he termed "hydrosadenite phlegmoneuse" to apocrine glands. He went on to publish four papers on this condition in which he confirmed his belief that hidradenitis represented a disease of apocrine glands, a view that became generally accepted with time. It took a series of detailed histopathological studies in the 1980s and 1990s to prove that hidradenitis is primarily an acne-like disease of follicular occlusion where apocrine glands only become involved in the context of an intense perifollicular inflammation. The initial process was found to be one of cornification of the follicular infundibulum, followed by an early inflammatory reaction and ultimately the rupture of the involved hair follicle. This leads on to the formation of abscesses which can either subside spontaneously over a matter of days or which occasionally progress into a chronic process of cutaneous or subcutaneous tunnelling, referred to as sinus tract formation. 1-4 ; Knowledge of this process has given us a better understanding of the disease and has helped to point us towards treatment attempts resembling those successfully used in acne vulgaris. Before these studies had emerged many hidradenitis patients had received treatments for presumed apocrine gland infections--with virtually no benefit at all. PATIENTS IN HIDING A further reason for our lack of progress rests with the patients themselves. Although it has never been scientifically studied or quantified, any researcher in the field will confirm the reluctance of patients with hidradenitis to come forward with their disease. Patients frequently conceal their condition and nembutal.

Both gemcitabine and navelbine produced increasing tumor growth delay with increasing dose of the drug. To assess the efficacy of the drug combination, the intermediate dosage regimen of navelbine was combined with each dosage level of gemcitabine. In addition to the 11 known nuclear-encoded subunits of the subcomplex, two unknown masses were observed reproducibly in analyses of different preparations of this subcomplex. It is evident that determination of the kinetic dependence of respiratory activity on the Q-reduction level unequivocally reveals the different activation levels attained by SDH Figs. 5B and 6 ; . It also clear that continuous Q-reduction measurements provide valuable information on the time-resolved kinetics of SDH activation Fig. 4 ; . Fullthickness skin grafts contain epidermis and all the dermis including the adnexal structures. Split-thickness skin grafts contain epidermis and a portion of the dermis, and are further subdivided into thin, intermediate and thick, according to the amount of dermis included in the graft8 Table 1 ; . Lastly, skin grafts can be classified according to how they were processed. After harvesting, grafts can be processed to enlarge their size. This can be accomplished in the operating room using an expansor that transforms them into an expanded grid similar to a net mesh grafts ; , or in a laboratory, using cell cultures.
